Hi friend,
I hope this finds you well.
This morning I found myself thinking about what I like to call productive procrastination. You know the kind: you throw yourself into a task, but not the task you’re “supposed” to be handling. Sometimes it’s a tiny chore, sometimes it’s organizing notes, or even just writing a few lines that feel unrelated.
I noticed something interesting: these detours often carry a kind of flow. I get absorbed and, before I know it, I’m calmer, clearer and ready. If I’m honest, sometimes it is avoidance—but not always. Sometimes it’s more like warming up: a small ritual that gets me ready for the real work without pressure.
From a positive psychology perspective, this little ritual isn’t a cheat. It can boost mood, create a sense of mastery, and even spark creative insights. By leaning into a side task that feels good, you’re reinforcing small wins, gratitude for progress, and clarity—all the things that make tackling the big stuff feel lighter. Who knew!
Of course, there’s a balance. Lean too long into these detours, and it slips into pure avoidance. Let’s be honest …I know the difference. Sometimes it’s preparation and warming up, and sometimes it’s, what do they call it in sports? Running the clock out. lol
What’s your go-to productive procrastination move?
