Some days, a small win feels like a strong start. The kind that makes you think, Today might actually be simple.
And then… it's not.
It's not one pebble in your shoe. It's a few. Every time you move to the next thing, there's something else—small, but enough to interrupt your rhythm. It's almost as if thinking the day might be simple sent out some kind of cosmic challenge... a challenge that was accepted.
Sometimes I just want things to be simple. And when they're not, it's surprisingly easy to feel thrown off. Why is it so easy? This isn't new territory. Is it optimism that refuses to be retrained? Expectations set without any margin for hiccups? Maybe I wasn't prepared enough for the first pebble because I didn't get enough sleep, and the pebble effect compounded as the day moved on.
I could hear the words, I can't do this today, working their way up, ready to be released into the atmosphere. It seemed a pity party might soon take place. It was calling my name... reservation for one.
But almost immediately, another thought stepped in:
What can you do?
Do something. Something that moves you forward, even if it's small. Find a win.
Sometimes a tiny move forward is enough to help get things back on course. Letting go of the all-or-nothing mindset is a big step forward. Sometimes "something" is simply recognizing that frustration is clouding the situation and deciding to switch gears instead.
I remember learning in school to "stop, drop, and roll" in case your clothes ever caught on fire.
So what's the drill for days like today?
Pause. Observe. Choose your move. Forward, always forward.
Admittedly, it's not quite as catchy as stop, drop, and roll.
