Does one degree really matter in life’s journey?
In a recent coaching conversation, I noticed how much impact a single word can have on motivation and mindset. Some words can feel like a burden or “have to,” while others invite curiosity and creativity. That tiny shift in language made a difference in how I approached a challenge—and it reminded me of the power of small adjustments in everything we do.
I’ve been thinking more about how the smallest shifts can lead to very different outcomes. The shift itself can seem insignificant—but what it sets in motion can change everything. What wasn’t in focus is now clear. What was closed is now open. What felt like defeat now feels like a signpost to keep going.
Great photographers know this intuitively. A slight change in angle or light can be the difference between an ordinary photo and one that stops you in your tracks. Just a small adjustment, and suddenly the image—and the perspective—changes entirely.
Even the words we choose can shift perspective. If I say, “I had a major setback,” it feels heavy—almost like a stop sign. If I say, “I had a temporary setback,” it feels more like road construction—something to move through, not something that ends the journey. And if I say, “I’m reworking my approach,” something shifts again. There’s movement. Possibility. A quiet sense of choice—a feeling that I’m not stuck here.
Setbacks often invite reflection. They ask us to pause, notice, and sometimes pivot—not as a sign of failure, but as part of moving forward with more clarity.
Change the words, and you change the meaning.
Change the meaning, and you change the direction.
Change the meaning, and you change the direction.
I’ve also heard a navigation analogy that brings this home. Even a one-degree shift in direction can take a boat miles off course over time. What seems small in the moment—the tiniest adjustment—can quietly determine where you end up. Sometimes the smallest shifts, choices, or changes in perspective are what create a way forward.
Sometimes the shifts we notice—or even dismiss—seem too small to matter. A word. A perspective. A tiny decision. But over time, these small adjustments set the course. They open doors we didn’t see before, reveal clarity we didn’t expect, and quietly guide us forward.
Pay attention to the small shifts. Lean into them. And trust that even a tiny change, made with intention, can create a way forward. Even subtle changes in the words we choose can make a difference—and that difference can open the way forward.
At The Art of Forward, we explore the small shifts that lead to meaningful movement.
